Most machinery problems announce themselves as heat long before they fail. A belt starts to slip, a bearing runs hot, an exhaust elbow begins to block. The trouble is nobody is down in the engine room watching while you are running.
Raymarine’s MTMS (Marine Thermal Monitoring System), previously known as the FLIR AX8, does exactly that. Its fixed thermal and visible camera keeps an eye on machinery spaces, shows live thermal and standard images at the helm, and can alarm when a temperature climbs past where it should be. It can also monitor critical areas such as raw-water pump impeller temperatures, helping identify cooling problems before they become failures. For anyone running longer passages, a larger vessel, or a boat that works for a living, that is real peace of mind.
As with anything, it is not for every boat, and it may be less relevant for some outboard-powered clients. Where it can be hugely important is on a single-engine cruising boat, where early warning of overheating or a cooling-system problem may help prevent a loss of propulsion and being stranded without power. It also earns its place on vessels with complex machinery, twin and triple installs, and commercial or charter operations where downtime is expensive. If you do fit one, the value is in getting it right: camera placement, clean integration with your MFD, and alarms set to sensible thresholds so you are warned early without nuisance alerts.
